Editorial - Willmott Dixon Group
The construction and property services
industry is one of the most exciting places
to work. It gives people a chance to make a
really positive change to their environment
and develop life long skills that are a passport
to travel and achieve real career fulfilment.
Choosing where to work is key to realizing
this opportunity.
Willmott Dixon Group is one of the biggest
names in construction with a graduate
management programme that consistently
produces future leaders.
Through its Willmott Dixon brand, which
focuses on building schools, hotels, offices,
retail, leisure and health facilities, or its
Inspace brand, responsible for building,
maintaining and improving homes across the
country, the Group offers a sustainable and
dynamic environment to learn, develop and
achieve career success.
Trainees are the lifeblood of the sector and
Willmott Dixon Group regards its graduate
managers as the leaders of tomorrow,
tailoring its programmes to ensure that every
individual achieves their full potential. Many
directors in the business are products of this
scheme and the company has a strong culture
of nurturing its talented people from the start
of their career with the Group.
Each year the Group takes on over 50
graduates as trainee managers, who fall into
three categories; year-out students currently
studying a construction-related degree, postgraduate
trainees with a construction-related
degree or graduates with no prior construction
experience who take a special conversion
diploma.
Graduates focus on one of the following
disciplines; quantity surveying, site
management, planning, estimating and preconstruction.
What are we looking for?
Whilst we prefer graduate trainees with a
minimum of a 2:1 degree who have had
either a year's industrial placement or some
relevant experience, we will also consider
under graduates. Self motivation, bags of
initiative and an ability to work within a team
come as standard!
Graduates with a relevant Royal Institution
of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), or Chartered
Institute of Builders (CIOB) accredited
degree undertake a two-year graduate
Development Programme, while those with
a non-construction related degree (noncognates)
undertake a three-year Graduate
Development Programme and study a postgraduate
conversion course.
Opportunities exist for under-graduates who
have just finished A levels to undertake a
four-year Under Graduate Development
Programme which includes day release to
study a relevant degree.
What does Willmott Dixon Group offer?
The Group believes it offers the chance to
grow and develop in one of the best working
environments in the construction and property
services industry. Graduates get first-class
exposure to some of the best projects in the
industry, working with some of the brightest
minds and within the Group's unique, peoplefocused
culture.
Willmott Dixon Group is privately owned and
has a clear commitment to remain so. Both
Willmott Dixon and Inspace regularly win
top industry awards for being one of the best
places to work in the sector. This includes
industry magazine Contract Journal naming
it 'Best Place to Work in Construction' four
years running, and the Sunday Times listing it
in 31st place in its 'Top 100 Best Companies to
work for' guide, the highest placed contractor
with a turnover of over £100 million.
The key to this recognition is our unique
culture where everyone really does feel they
have an important contribution to make. Most
people are on first name terms with Group
Chief Executive Rick Willmott, which is
not common in the largest ten construction
companies!
To underline how important graduates are, we
celebrate and recognise the best of our talent
at the Group's annual 'Trainee of the Year'
event attended by all senior directors.
