Lewisham Council is the largest employer in the Borough, with 8,100 staff providing a wide range of services to 250,000 people. We put service to the public first; respect all people and all communities, invest in employees and are open, honest and fair in all we do.

Lewisham has been successfully involved with the National Graduate Development Programme since the scheme's inception in 2002. Since 2002, Lewisham has hosted two or three National Management Trainees (NMT's) each year, bringing the total to 25, and probably has the highest retention rate nationally at 82% currently.

In Lewisham, the scheme is organised as follows:

Year 1 - Three x four month placements linked to front-line service development

Year 2 - A six month placement based at the corporate centre, working on a range of strategic, cross-cutting projects

Year 3 - A one year placement within a service area which takes each National Management Trainee beyond their traineeship and positions them to take advantage of management career opportunities in the Council.

We negotiate with heads of service across the Council to place NMT's in one-year placements, at an increased salary, in areas which will enhance their longer term career options and choices, and these roles are designed to enable the NMT's to gain a more in-depth grounding in one or more service areas and position them for their next step up. Examples of one-year placements have included:-

Casework Team Manager – Regeneration

Policy and Project Officer - Local Strategic

Partnership Team – Resources

Project Manager – Integrated Youth Support Service – CYP

Programme Management & Property Support Officer - Regeneration

We continue to provide support and advice to trainees once the traineeship finishes. Extrainees are very much involved with the continuing development of the Scheme in Lewisham, in particular the annual recruitment process. Many of the ex-trainees are now senior managers within the organisation and in some cases manage either current or other ex-trainees in project placements or full time roles.

Lewisham is a 4 star Council with Equality Standard 5 rating, we are home to some of the capital's most exciting and innovative organisations - the award winning Laban contemporary dance conservatoire, Deptford Albany and Horniman Museum. Lewisham is undergoing its biggest transformation since Victorian times, with unparalleled public and private investment meaning significant regeneration and renewal.

We expect employees to work hard to provide services which respond to community needs and views as well as providing a fair, courteous and responsive service whilst getting things done efficiently, making the best use of resources and acting as ambassadors for the Council. We aim for excellence which means we expect all employees to view change positively, focussing on suggestions and solutions for improvements
