Why did you apply for the Nationwide Graduate Programme?
Nationwide offer specific divisional programmes in other areas as well as Financial Management, e.g. HR, IT (Transformation & Technology Services). They also take on relatively few numbers (approx 35) of graduates each year. As such, my hope that I would be entrusted and exposed to important front-line IT work and projects from day 1 became very much a reality. The programme is tailor made to develop each graduate into tomorrow's leader and it supports you and monitors your progress throughout. You are sent on various leadership and self awareness training courses and you have the chance to put what you've learnt into practice. What's more, thanks to the culture at Nationwide, you're treated with respect and encouraged to maintain a good work life balance.
What is your role at Nationwide?
I finished the graduate programme in August 2011 and now I am a Project Portfolio Planning Manager in Business Transformation. My main responsibilities are to capture, analyse and report upon the performance of Nationwide's Transformation Portfolio which is worth £400 M. As I applied for the Technology & Transformation programme, I worked in IT Development, IT Enterprise Architecture, IT Transformation and an external placement as a team leader in an Operations area.
How do you think you have benefited from working for Nationwide?
The support you get during the development phase of your career is really exceptional. Your line manager, mentor, HR and the Talent & Development team are all really helpful and supportive; the main focus is on helping you achieve your career aspirations. I have benefited from a huge amount of personal and professional development, obtaining a wealth of key skills and experience from project management to from team leading and performance management. I enjoyed being given the opportunity to become an expert in so many different areas over a short time, helping to develop a well-rounded appreciation of the business while still driving towards an area of specialism.
What are your ambitions now you have finished the Nationwide Graduate Programme?
Nationwide is a great place to work; it is challenging, supporting, rewarding and collaborative which is exactly what I want in my career. Therefore I want to stay with Nationwide and develop as many capabilities as possible in the next 3 – 5 years which will make me versatile. I also want to complete an MBA in the near future and work towards becoming a key member of the leadership team.
