DLA Piper is one of the world's largest
full service commercial law firms with UK
offices in Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow,
Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and
Sheffield.
The firm now has more than 8,000 employees
working from over 60 offices across Europe,
Asia, the Middle East and the US. Their
current vision is to be the leading global
business law firm. Clients include some of
the world's leading businesses, governments,
banks and financial institutions and this
impressive client base, coupled with an
emphasis on providing high quality service
and teamwork, offers a challenging fastpaced
working environment.
DLA Piper offers its trainees the opportunity
to apply for international secondments to their
Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Hong Kong, Moscow,
Singapore and Tokyo offices, as well as a
number of client secondments.
In 2008 DLA Piper won the prestigious
National Graduate Recruitment Awards'
'Diversity Recruitment Award' proving their
commitment to recruiting people from a
wide variety of backgrounds and ages. This
progressive approach to recruitment creates
a mix of talents that contributes to their
success.
DLA Piper holds the 'Investors in People'
accreditation, demonstrating commitment to
its employees and their ongoing development.
As well as taking care of its own people,
DLA Piper has extensive Corporate Social
Responsibility/Pro Bono programmes in
place. The firm feels that taking part in these
programmes helps to broaden the perspectives
of the DLA Piper people who take part. For
trainees, pro bono work (for companies like
The Princes Trust) means gaining valuable
experience in running their own cases and
experiencing a unique level of work and
responsibility.
MAIN AREAS OF WORK
DLA Piper has the following main areas of
work: Corporate; Employment, Pensions &
Benefits; Finance & Projects; Litigation &
Regulatory; Real Estate; and Technology,
Media & Commercial.
TRAINEE PROFILE
The firm is looking for individuals from
either a law or non-law background who have
a minimum of 3 Bs at A Level (or equivalent)
and expect, or have achieved a 2.1 degree
classification - however, a strong academic
background alone is no longer sufficient.
DLA Piper looks for highly motivated and
energetic team players with sound commercial
awareness, outstanding communication and
organisational skills. As well as this, in line
with the firm's main focus of work, a keen
interest in the corporate world is essential - as
is an appetite for life!
There is no standard DLA Piper trainee,
everyone is different and they encourage
their trainees to be themselves. They aren't
looking to recruit clones.
TRAINING ENVIRONMENT
Trainees complete four six month seats
during the course of their training contract.
If you want responsibility, they will give you
as much as you can handle and your progress
will be monitored through regular reviews
and feedback. The compulsory Professional
Skills Course is run in-house and is tailored
to meet the needs of DLA Piper's trainees.
This combined with on-the-job experience,
provides trainees with an excellent grounding
on which to build their professional careers.
SUMMER PLACEMENTS
DLA Piper offers around 200 places on their
summer scheme each year. The scheme allows
people to gain a real insight into life at DLA
Piper. Attendees shadow a fee earner in two
different departments and are given a range
of work to do. In addition to this a number
of presentations are given from departments,
partners and trainees, and social events are
organised, allowing the opportunity to talk to
a wide variety of staff, in both business and
informal settings.
