Competitive salaries, international travel and
a range of exciting career choices, are just
some of the rewards available to chartered
accountants. The Institute of Chartered
Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)
is a world leader of the accountancy and
finance profession with 132,000 members in
over 165 countries.
The ACA qualification is an internationally
respected and prestigious professional
business and accountancy qualification,
carefully designed to equip graduates with
the knowledge, experience and skills needed
to become a professional business advisor.
About the ACA
The ACA qualification provides graduates
with the skills, expertise and understanding
for a career in accounting, business and
finance.
The ACA qualification is made up of 15
examinations, alongside 450 days of work
experience. For graduates with an accounting
or business related degree, or a professional
accountancy qualification, credit for prior
learning (CPL) may be available. Depending
on your degree, university and module
pass mark, you may apply for up to eight
credits against professional stage ACA
exam modules
Our unique training produces chartered
accountants who are valued in all sectors,
from firms of chartered accountants (public
practice), commercial organisations and
multinationals to public sector bodies. Over
84% of FTSE 100 company boards include at
least one qualified ACA - proof that the ACA
is really worth having.
Earn and learn
Graduates study for the ACA while in fulltime
employment, earning a competitive
salary. As a trainee chartered accountant
you work and study at the same time. The
ICAEW authorise employers to ensure you
are supported fully throughout your three
year training contract. Training contracts are
available nationwide and overseas at a variety
of organisations from the Big 4 to industry,
commerce and not-for-profit.
Have you got what it takes?
To embark on the ACA programme you will
need to secure an ACA training contract
with an authorised training employer (ATE).
Training employers require graduates with
a proven academic track record, in addition
to a 2.1 or first-class degree in any degree
discipline. Only 11% of ACA trainees are
accountancy graduates. A minimum of 280
UCAS points are normally required as is
an A or B in Maths and English GCSE or
international equivalents. Our authorised
training employers also look for employability
skills so evidence of voluntary work, part
time jobs, sporting activities or student
society involvement is great to include in
your applications.
Training for the ACA
ACA trainees can expect to double their
salaries during training, with salaries for
newly qualified ACAs comparing favourably
with other graduate careers such as law,
management and banking.
Qualified to succeed
Our website
lists
the ACA training opportunities and provides
information on application deadlines and how
to apply. A hard-copy edition of Training
Vacancies is also published four times a
year and is available from university careers
centres, careers fairs and from the ICAEW.
With dedicated support and tuition it is no
surprise that over 78% of trainee ACA's
pass their final year exams first time before
embarking on their careers as chartered
accountants, finance directors and business
leaders.
Start early
For students still at university, or on
a placement year, The Certificate in
Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB)
qualification can be used as an entry route
onto the ACA as it consists of the first six
modules of the ACA Professional Stage
exams. CFAB is designed to develop your
general knowledge in finance, accounting
and business. All modules have computerbased
assessments which can be taken at a
time to suit you or your employer. There are
three study routes for CFAB: self-taught,
classroom and distance learning.
