THE FIRM
Hogan & Hartson is a dynamic, full-service "Top 30" global law firm with world-scale transactions and an enviable client base that includes representations of more than half the Global Fortune 100 in 2008. The firm, headquartered in Washington DC, now has more than 1,100 lawyers in 27 offices worldwide.
In London we have been advising UK, U.S., pan-European, and other multinational businesses since we opened our doors in 1990. Our London based lawyers are UK and U.S. qualified (including some with dual qualifications) and have extensive experience throughout Europe as well as in regions with particularly complex legal and political dynamics such as Russia and the CIS, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Today we have more than 60 lawyers (having grown from fewer than 10 lawyers at the start of 2002). We are committed to a collaborative culture and enjoyable work environment.
TYPES OF WORK
The London office has a large corporate team, providing legal advice on mergers and acquisitions, private equity and venture capital, joint ventures and capital markets. In addition, we have established practices in banking and asset finance; competition and antitrust; dispute resolution; employment; tax; real estate; project and international finance and privatization. We have a strong international reputation in the energy and natural resources; technology, media and telecoms; hotels and leisure; aviation and life sciences sectors.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
We are looking for bright and talented people with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests who are committed to a career in law. Personality, drive and enthusiasm are key, as you will be expected to take responsibility and show initiative at an early stage, of course with appropriate supervision. Trainees should have a minimum 2:1 degree and 3 A-levels at A and B grade. Trainees would be expected to pass the LPC and the GDL at the first attempt.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate a real interest in us and the law but we also like to see involvement in outside interests particularly those involving teamwork. We like to keep in contact with our future trainees, and as you continue with your studies, you will be invited to our social events and will be encouraged to meet up with our lawyers on a regular basis.
OUR TRAINEE PROGRAMME
We have an extensive practice in London and as such trainees will have at least four seats, spending six months in three core areas - corporate, litigation and property - and a further six months in one of our specialised teams such as tax, employment and competition. Trainees will sit with a senior lawyer and will be exposed to work from everyone in their department, with appropriate support and supervision. Feedback on trainee performance will be provided on an ongoing basis. Trainees are encouraged to participate in our established training programme in addition to attending Professional Skills Courses.
