Profile
Baillie Gifford is one of the leading privately
owned investment management firms in the
UK and currently has over £40 billion under
management or advice. It is also one of the
fastest growing firms in the sector, helped
by an impressive investment performance
record and an exclusive focus on investment
management.
We are active managers. Our basic aim is
to achieve high returns for our clients and
to beat their benchmarks. We have a highly
analytical, research driven approach and
build our portfolios from the bottom up.
The firm has a unique partnership structure,
being wholly owned and managed by its 32
working partners. This ownership structure
and this gives us several important advantages
over our competitors, both culturally and
commercially.
What we are looking for
We want individuals with consistently high
academic achievement, a First/2.1 degree
in any discipline. This is a qualitative rather
than quantitative job so you do not need to be
studying a related or numeric degree. We also
welcome applications from those seeking an
early change in their professional career and
from PhD students.
What you will be doing
Investment management is a demanding and
challenging business, and success depends
on market knowledge, sound judgement and
providing a high quality service to our clients.
We will ensure that you get a thorough
grounding in these skills.
We have a structured, tried and tested training
programme which comprises of on-the-job
training, internal tailored training courses
and study for the IMC and CFA. Working
alongside fund managers and partners, trainees
learn how to analyse company accounts
and assess the investment characteristics
and prospects of companies from a wide
variety of sectors. Trainees meet company
management and contribute to departmental
investment strategy.
A specialist department, the Institutional
Clients Department, is responsible for
providing client service, and you will spend
a secondment here within your first three
years.

fund management.
