Be where it matters
The Fast Stream is the Civil Service's
accelerated development programme for
graduates with the potential to reach the very
top. There is a huge commitment to deliver a
diverse Civil Service. Joining the Civil
Service means having the opportunity to
make a difference on issues that affect the
entire country and beyond, such as education,
unemployment, food safety, healthcare and
international relations and development.
Whatever your degree discipline, your skills
and your interests, there is a wealth of
challenge and stimulation on offer within the
Civil Service. We expect at least a 2:2 in any
degree discipline and generally you must be a
UK National. Fast Streamers come from a
wide range of backgrounds, but they all share
certain attributes. We are looking for resultsoriented
individuals who demonstrate
flexible thinking, decisiveness and strong
relationship building skills, with a
commitment to personal and professional
development and to making an impact.
Join the Fast Stream and you will be given
real responsibility from day one! It won't
sound so much like a cliché when you hear
your minister reading out an answer you have
prepared in the House of Commons. In this
kind of environment, you will quickly notice
the enhancement of your ability, confidence
and professionalism and you will develop a
sense of pride in what you have achieved.
Fast Streamers begin their careers with a
series of placements or 'postings' - different
jobs within their departments. You can expect
each posting to last around 12 or 18 months,
after which you'll move on to another project
or area of work. Secondment opportunities
are also available with most departments and
are actively encouraged. You may find
yourself working in Europe, in business or
industry, or in another government
department. Your career will be developed
within three distinct but complementary
professional areas: Policy Delivery,
Operational Delivery and Corporate Services
Delivery. Be assured that you will be
supported while you learn to enable you to
gain the skills you need to succeed.
