The Foreign & Commonwealth Office
(FCO) is the lead UK department handling
foreign affairs. The work of the FCO can
be separated into three key areas: political,
service delivery and corporate services. Our
political departments handle UK relations
with other countries and international
institutions - such as NATO, the UN and the
EU. They also work on a wide range of topics
such as counter terrorism, conflict prevention,
climate change and weapons proliferation.
Service delivery departments interact directly
with the public, dealing with issues such
as supporting British nationals abroad and
promoting UK businesses overseas. Our
corporate services teams provide services to
the FCO and are responsible for the smooth
running of operations both in the UK and
overseas, and include human resources,
finance, and IT.
In the last five years we've offered jobs to
more Fast Streamers than any other central
government department. We're looking for
people who want to be part of a diverse,
talented, high-performing team working
towards a safe, just and prosperous world. Like
us, you'll be forwarding-thinking, innovative
and able to develop new solutions to difficult
problems (such as deciding what to do about
a missing holiday maker or trying to stop the
flow of illegal drugs into the UK). You don't
need a degree in international relations to join
us - we look at you as a whole package, not
just what you studied at university.
You don't need languages to apply but if
you have them, great. We're particularly
interested in Arabic, Farsi, Korean, Pashtu,
Dari, French, Russian, Spanish and Mandarin.
If you can't speak these then don't worry. If
we're sending you to a country to do a job
where you need to speak the local language,
we'll train you.
If this isn't going to be your first job,
you may bring with you experience of
change management, economics, finance,
procurement, accountancy, contract
management or project management.
We seek our strength through diversity and
encourage applications from all sections
of society - including women, people with
disabilities and people of minority ethnic
origin - to enable us to reflect the society we
serve. We offer positions to suitably qualified
individuals regardless of ethnicity, religion,
gender, social/university background, age,
disability or sexual orientation.
