Application procedure
Herbert Smith recruits up to 105 students
from all academic disciplines to begin training
contracts in September 2011 or March 2012.

Training Contracts
The training process at Herbert Smith is
carefully balanced between contentious and
non-contentious work; early responsibility
and close support. Great emphasis is placed on
professional and personal development, with
the firm running a mentoring scheme as well
as its own legal development programme.
Herbert Smith also has a strong reputation
for the training it provides its trainees. As
a trainee at Herbert Smith you will rotate
around four seats of six months each, which
can include a seat in a specialist area such as
IP, tax, trusts, EU/ competition, employment,
pensions and incentives or their advocacy
unit. Alternatively you can apply to go on
secondment to a client or to one of their
international offices.
Sponsorship: CPE/GDL and LPC fees are
paid. Herbert Smith also offers maintenance
grants of up to £7,000 p.a.
Salary: First year: £37,500; Second year:
£42,500; Qualification salary: £64,000
Vacation Schemes
Herbert Smith offers six two-week vacation
schemes; one in winter (non-law students
only), one in spring and four in summer. The
deadline for the winter vacation scheme is 10
November 2008, and the deadline for the spring
and summer schemes is 31 January 2009.
