About us

Withers is the first international law firm dedicated to the business and personal interests of successful people, their families, their businesses and their advisers.

Founded in 1896, the firm soon established a reputation for family law and landed estates work, a reputation we still have today. The firm's international status was enhanced in 1995, when McKenzie Mills, a boutique firm specialising in English law for Italian clients, joinedWithers. The firm now has the highest number of Italian speakers of any City law firm. In 2001, Withers merged with a niche US private client law firm Bergman Horowitz and Reynolds, providing the firm with its crucial transatlantic capability.

Withers now has offices in London, Milan, Geneva, New York, New Haven and Greenwich (Connecticut), employing around 600 people. Of its fee earners, 40% are conversant in more than one language.

Our Work

Withers has the largest private client team in the world, a family team with an unparalleled reputation and expertise, and is a recognised leader in litigation, property, employment and commercial law.

The firm's clients include the Renault F1 team; Moschino; Vera Wang; Cancer Research UK; The British Red Cross; UK Film Council; The Duke of Marlborough, along with 15% of Britain's wealthiest individuals and a significant number of the Forbes 400 richest Americans; numerous entrepreneurs, various investment and private banks; sports and media personalities; and other major international figures and families.

Work Placements

Withers also offers work experience schemes to enable potential trainees to get a flavour of the firm and its work. Schemes, of a fortnight in duration, are available in either the London or Milan office. Successful applicants can look forward to being fully immersed in the firm's caseload and other events during their experience, as well as being given ample chance to find out more about the full training scheme from current trainees.

Training Seats

The diversity of Withers work can be seen in the availability of its training seats. Its two year training programme offers four seats of six months duration. Seats are available in the following areas:

Charities; Commercial Litigation; Corporate & Commercial; Contentious Trust & Succession Group (CTSG); Employment; Estate Succession & Trust (EST); Family; Geneva Office – International Wealth Planning and some International; Litigation; Intellectual Property (IP); Milan Office – advising Italian clients on UK/International Corporate Law; Property Litigation; Commercial, Residential and Rural Real Estate; Tate – in-house lawyers advising the iconic gallery on a range of issues; as well as Wealth Planning in Family & Business (FAB), Funds, Investments, Tax & Trusts (FITT) and International Matters (INT).

Withers takes a small number of trainees per year, in order to maximise the diversity and level of work exposure, responsibility and client contact for those selected. The resulting opportunity to train in a firm at the top of its market, working alongside renowned experts in their field, is an unrivalled experience. The firm was ranked 5th in Sweet & Maxwell's Top Legal Employers Guide 2007.

What do we look for ?

Applicants from all degree disciplines and at all stages of their career are welcomed by Withers. The firm actively aims to attract a vibrant, diverse community with individual talents and insights which reflect its client base. As well as a keen intellect, applicants should demonstrate an ability to be a team player with leadership qualities and the confidence and interpersonal skills to be able to interact with the firm's varied client base. Applicants must also have a high degree of determination, flexibility, and commercial acumen. The international nature of the practice means that language skills, though not essential, are useful.
