A Day In the Life of a Trainee…

8.30am
I arrive early in the office for my French lesson (normally I would arrive at 9.15). It's a good way to start the week and engage my brain before heading upstairs to my desk. I am hoping to go on international secondment to our Paris office in my next seat, so it is useful to keep practicing.

10.00am
On arrival in my office I take a few minutes out to discuss the weekend's activities with my supervisor before checking my e-mails for any developments or requests for work from members of the Banking department – where I'm currently sitting. I check the list of the work that I have to do in the week to focus my mind on what needs to be done and the priority of the tasks. At the moment I'm working on a South African deal that is being listed on the Irish Stock Exchange, which is a new process to me – fortunately my supervisor and the Partner involved have done it all before and are happy to point me in the right direction if I have any questions – which I do! I check the deal timetable so that I am aware of what needs to happen this week, being involved in several deals at the same time requires some organisation!

12.00pm
I receive an e-mail from an associate in my department asking if I have time to help on a quick matter. I have, so I go round to see her and she explains that she would like me to carry out several Company searches to confirm they are still in full operation and to check that we have the Companies' correct details. This is a regular trainee task which I've done before so I am able to complete it just in time for lunch.

1.00pm
Down to the staff restaurant for lunch with a few of the trainees to catch up. We are in the process of organising a trainee summer social, so the venue is top of the agenda…

1.45pm
Back upstairs. The firm Cricket team are playing tomorrow night and I am organising the side, so I need to send out an email reminder for people to remember their kit. Unfortunately, even lawyers can be a little forgetful sometimes!

2.00pm
Back to work on the South African deal. We have received comments from the Investment Bank that we are acting for and I need to redraft the agreements to reflect their comments. Then I call the Irish Stock Exchange regarding the Prospectus, the admission document you have to submit in order to list securities for public trading.

4.30pm
Team meeting. Every two weeks the team meet to discuss the progress of current deals, marketing news and, most importantly, forthcoming social events. Apparently the Banking department didn't do very well in the Firm's sports day last year and we should all be in training for it this year – the promise of a night out if we do well is incentive enough!

5.00pm
Further work on the listing. The deadline for sending out several of the agreements is close of business today – so I need to check they are all complete before attaching them to an email and sending them out. Once I've finished I go through my work list to make sure I have done everything I need to today – with lots on at the same time its important to make sure that nothing gets overlooked.

6.30pm
Head downstairs to the bar at the bottom of the Simmons & Simmons building. It's very close so it's become the local for most people in the firm. It's a good chance to see a few people I haven't seen for a while that are in other departments.

9.30pm Head home to catch up with my flatmates before getting some sleep!
