Editorial - OC&C Strategy Consultants
What did you do before joining OC&C?
I studied Economics and Management at
Hertford College, Oxford.Whilst there I was in
charge of the Future Flyers careers guides for
consulting and banking, and this is where
I developed an interest in consulting. I had no
prior business experience, but I had liaised with
lots of recruitment staff for the Future Flyers
guides, and therefore developed a pretty good
knowledge of what consulting was about.
Why strategy consulting as a career?/Why
OC&C?
I felt strategy consulting sounded more
interesting as a career because you get to work
within businesses on high-level issues that can
have a huge impact. I was keen to find a smaller
firm where I could get to know the company
and the staff much more easily. Having done the
internship, I feel it definitely helped me make
an informed decision about which career path
I wanted to take. The main reason I accepted
their offer of a job was that I knew I would
never dread going to work.
How was it being an Intern?
When I started as an Intern it was a bit daunting,
but the people here are all really nice and easy
to get on with. The atmosphere around the
office is really chilled, and there are always
loads of people about who are willing to explain
things if you need any help.
Can you give some details of an interesting
project you have worked on?
During my internship, I was only on one
project: a pure strategy project, defining the
mortgage strategy for the subsidiary of a major
investment bank. Other friends who had done
financial internships were mainly stuck doing
data entry and other number-crunching things,
but right from the start I was included as a full
member of the team and given as much
responsibility as a full Associate. Sitting in on
the client board meetings was scary, but a
great experience and not one that many
undergraduates get to have. Since starting full
time I've done a range of projects across all our
sectors and the variety of work is one of the best
things about the job.
What is the best thing about working at OC&C?/
What gives OC&C its unique appeal?
The atmosphere in the office. If you spend
loads of time working with clever, motivated
people, you very quickly start noticing
improvements in your own work. And we all
have a laugh as well.
Is there any advice you would give to
prospective applicants?
Just go for it! Don't get flustered if you get
difficult questions thrown back at you, it
probably means they like you and want to see
how far they can push you. Also whilst OC&C
are looking for bright people, we are also
looking for people that we can work with. Be
relaxed, be personable and try to show that you
have the maturity, flexibility, enthusiasm and
commitment to work as part of an OC&C team.
