of a diverse range of development activities
delivered by various parts of the organisation.
Each graduate has the opportunity to develop
strong technical, behavioural and professional
competencies through on the job experience
and coaching and attending the Groupwide
Foundations Program. A BHP Billiton
graduate would typically experience a range
of development activities that may include
the following:
Starting as a graduate Induction - Graduates undergo an Induction
process to provide them with information
about BHP Billiton, its core values, strategic
drivers, organisational characteristics and
core processes.
eLearning Modules - The BHP Billiton
eLearning is mandatory pre-work for
the Foundations for Graduates Program.
The eLearning has 22 modules covering

Graduate development elements
Foundations for Graduate Program - The
Foundations for Graduates Program is a twoyear
development experience for graduates,
comprising a mix of classroom based, on-thejob
application and self paced learning.
BHP Billiton Competencies and Your
Development Plan - The BHP Billiton
Foundations for Graduates program has been
designed around a set of agreed BHP Billiton
professional graduate competencies. It is these
competencies that will be used to effectively
measure the growth and development of
graduates at BHP Billiton.
Understanding Your Performance -
Throughout the graduate program, graduates
undergo the performance review process in
order to assess their technical, professional
and behavioural skills and knowledge at
key points during the experience in order
to establish strengths and gaps for further
development.
Job Rotations - The purpose of job rotations
is to expose graduates to the business, to
develop technical skills and abilities to
perform in their current job role and to
give them an opportunity to consider career
possibilities beyond the graduate experience.
Mentoring - Mentoring is recognised as a
critical success factor in career development
and access to a Mentor is considered one
of the top five graduate priorities when
evaluating the success of their development
experience.
Professional Training and Development -
Graduates should familiarise themselves
with the professional bodies and associations
that are relevant to their role. Discipline
heads and/or HR Representatives can also
make graduates aware of the professional
bodies which are relevant, and encourage the
graduate to join their appropriate professional
associations/memberships.
