'Cmon Over' to Northern Ireland
Thinking about what you will do once you
graduate may be the furthest thing from
your mind right now. Coursework, exams
and graduation are more than likely to take
precedence over decisions about where you
will live and work. You may be one of the
many thousands of students who left Northern
Ireland (NI) to study in the UK and Ireland
and perhaps now is the time to consider
coming back. If on the other hand you have
never been to NI then perhaps now is the time
to give it a little thought!
Living in Northern Ireland
Images of NI's past have now been replaced
by images of thriving city centres, awardwinning
restaurants and bars, beautiful
countryside and a more upbeat and optimistic
attitude. As with most regions, living costs
vary depending on the area in which you
choose to live - living close to the city centre
will always be higher than if you live in a
smaller town away from the city. Transport
links are on a par with those in the UK with
frequent bus and train services running
between the various towns, villages and cities.
On a wider scale NI is easily accessible by air
and sea.
Working in Northern Ireland
Companies are crying out for graduates
with Science, Technology, Engineering,
Maths and IT skills, as well as experienced
managers and business leaders in sectors
including Financial Services, Telecoms and
Electronics, Life Sciences, Business Services,
and Software. Many employers offer
competitive salaries, continuous training,
excellent terms and conditions and career
progression opportunities. In NI, graduates in
Software Engineering roles can earn between
£18 and £22k. Roles in Life Sciences can
pay up to £26k dependant on the company
and the actual job role. Some employers
have graduate recruitment programmes and
schemes which can be a good way of getting
started. Examples of these include BT (
) and NI Civil Service (
). Recruitment
companies too are now actively targeting
people from outside of the region who have
the senior management skills required to
take forward new and established businesses
here.
