Burges Salmon is proof that law doesn't
necessarily have to mean London.
Based in Bristol, our turnover has more than
tripled in recent years as we continue to win
prestigious clients out of the hands of our
City rivals. Clients such as The Ministry of
Defence, The Crown Estate, Reuters, Orange
and Coca Cola HBC rely on our legal
expertise and in doing so have helped cement
our reputation as creative, lateral thinkers.
But the quality of work we regularly attract
would not have come to us were it not for our
primary asset – our people. Our trainees
benefit from supervision by some of the best
minds in the industry: lawyers who are
leaders in their field with a formidable depth
of experience. All this against the backdrop
of Bristol: a city with a quality of life you
would be hard pressed to find anywhere else
in the UK.
Types of Work
Burges Salmon provides national and
international clients with a full commercial
service through 6 main departments:
Corporate & Financial Institutions; Commercial;
Property; Tax & Trusts; Commercial
Disputes & Construction; and Agriculture,
Property Litigation & Environment.
Specialist areas include: Banking; EU &
Competition; Corporate Finance; Employment;
IP & IT; and Transport. The firm is
ranked top tier by Chambers and Partners for
18 of its practice areas.
Training Programme
We are justifiably proud of our reputation
for offering some of the best training in
the profession: the Law Society recently
accredited the firm's training programme
with seven points of good practice, where
in previous years the maximum awarded to
any firm was two points. Training is
personalised to suit each individual, and our
six seat structure allows the opportunity to
experience a wider range of practice areas
before making a decision on qualification.
This dedication to trainees is demonstrated
by a high retention rate, which is well above
the industry average.
Trainee Profile
We are looking for intelligent, ambitious
individuals who can demonstrate a high
degree of commercial acumen coupled with
a genuine enthusiasm for the law. We also
look for evidence of achievement in non
academic pursuits which demonstrate your
ability to build relationships with both clients
and colleagues.
Vacation Schemes
Burges Salmon runs 2 Open Days in
February, and offers 40 two-week Vacation
Placements during the summer. Individuals
visit 2 departments of their choice supervised
by a partner or senior solicitor, and attend
court visits and client meetings. Current
trainees run skills training sessions, sports and
social events. Remuneration: £250 per week.
Sponsorship
The firm pays GDL and LPC fees at the
institution of your choice. Maintenance
grants of £6,000 are paid to LPC students,
and £12,000 to students studying for both the
GDL and LPC (£6,000 pa).
Benefits
Benefits for trainees include 24 days paid
annual leave, bonus scheme, membership of
the firm's pension scheme, life assurance,
private health care, mobile phone, corporate
gym membership and membership of Burges
Salmon's sports and social club.
