The Firm

Jones Day operates as one firm world-wide with 2,200 lawyers in 30 offices. Jones Day in London is a key part of this international partnership and has around 200 lawyers, including around 45 partners and 40 trainees. This means we can offer our lawyers the perfect combination – the intimacy and atmosphere of a medium sized City firm with access to both UK and multi-national clients.

Types of Work

Principal areas of practice at Jones Day include: Corporate finance and M&A transactions; investment funds, private equity and corporate tax planning, banking, capital markets and structured finance, business restructuring, litigation, intellectual property tax and real estate. The London office also has teams of lawyers who are experienced in such areas as competition/antitrust, environmental, and employment and pensions law.

Who should apply

Candidates should have obtained or be predicted a 2:1 degree in any discipline. We look for candidates with either a law or nonlaw degree, who have strong intellectual and analytical ability, good communication skills and who can demonstrate resourcefulness, drive, dedication and the ability to be a team player.

Training programme

The firm operates a unique, non-rotational system of training which is designed to provide freedom, flexibility and responsibility from the start. Our trainees work across different practice areas concurrently and are encouraged to assume their own workload, which allows for early responsibility, faster development of potential and the opportunity to compare and contrast different disciplines alongside one another. Because our trainees do not move to a different department every six months they don't miss the end of deals or trials that they have worked on. Work will vary from small cases which trainees may handle alone (under the supervision of a senior lawyer) to matters where they will assist a partner or an associate solicitor.

The firm runs a structured training programme with a regukar schedule of seminars to support the thorough practical training and regular feedback that trainees receive from the associates and partners that they work with.
