The Metropolitan Police Service is always
growing and evolving to meet the everchanging
demands of London's vibrant mix
of nationalities, faiths and cultures. We are
here to protect and serve every Londoner. It's
a uniquely challenging and comprehensive
remit. It's also one that makes us an Employer
of Choice. We have an open culture, a
commitment to embracing change and,
fundamentally, an understanding and
appreciation of the fact that our people –
uniformed and non-uniformed alike – make
us what we are.
Our dedication to finding new ways to
provide the kind of service that London wants
and needs has seen the Met recognized
worldwide as a leading authority on policing
today. Founded in 1829 by Home Secretary
Sir Robert Peel, the Met started out with just
1,000 officers policing a population of 2
million. Fast-forward to the 21st century and
there are now some 50,000 officers and staff,
responsible for 7.2 million Londoners,
spanning 32 boroughs and 620 square miles.
Working for the Met is a unique job with
unique demands, particularly in a city such as
London. As a uniformed Police Officer
you'll be operating on the front-line,
supporting victims and witnesses as well as
providing and instilling confidence that
builds relationships, trust and a reassuring
presence. As a Special Constable (Volunteer
Police Officer) you volunteer around 16
hours a month – you'll acquire skills that last
for the rest of your life whilst gaining a real
sense of satisfaction from your work. Police
Community Support Officers (PCSOs)
help create safer neighbourhoods. With an
ability to listen and resolve all kinds of issues
you'll become a visible deterrent against
crime in the community, improving the
quality of life for everyone. Wherever your
career takes you, you'll find a truly rewarding
role improving the lives of Londoners and
visitors alike.
As London's largest employer, Met people
come from all walks of life, have all manner
of skills and experiences and carry out all
sorts of different roles. As well as the officers
out on the policing frontline, the Met also
employs 14,000 members of Police Staff who
are involved in everything from answering
emergency calls to forensics, legal services,
keeping our accounts in order to working at
the cutting-edge of IT – the list is endless.
Because the Met is committed to creating a
police service that fully reflects London's
diversity, it's essential that all applicants
have a genuine respect and sensitivity for
working effectively with the capital's many
different communities.
The sheer size and diversity of the Met brings
very special challenges but it also brings
unique rewards. Beyond the sense of pride,
inclusiveness and utility that every Met role
brings, you're assured a good salary,
excellent career prospects, a superb pension
and the unparalleled sense of achievement
that comes with helping to make London safer.

opportunities employer.
