Who Should Apply
Applications are welcome from penultimate
year law students and final-year non-law
students, or anyone wishing to commence a
training contract in two years' time. Trainees
need a strong academic record, common
sense, self-confidence and intelligence to
make their own way in a large firm. They are
typically high-achieving and creative
thinking.
Training Programme
Structured training and supervision are
designed to allow experience of a unique range
of contentious and non-contentious work.
You will work within partner-led teams and
have your own role. Individual strengths will
be monitored, developed and utilised.
As a trainee, you will rotate around four
‘seats' of six months each, including one in
litigation, one in corporate and a further non
contentious seat in either finance or real
estate. You can also apply for a specialist seat
such as IP, Tax, Trust, EU and Competition,
Employment, Pensions and Incentives or our
advocacy unit.Alternatively, you can apply to
go on secondment to a client or to one of our
international offices.
Great emphasis is placed on professional and
personal development and the firm runs its
own legal development programme.
Sponsorship & Benefits
GDL/CPE and LPC fees are paid as well as a
maintenance grant of up to £7,000 p.a.
Benefits include profit share, permanent

insurance and matched contributory pension
scheme and interest free loan. Trainee
solicitors also receive 25 days paid holiday a
year (rising to 27 days on qualification).
Number of Vacancies
Herbert Smith is currently recruiting up to
105 students to commence training contracts
in September 2010 or March 2011. The

Vacation Placements
We are offering 130 vacancies for vacation
scheme placements betweenWinter 2007 and
Spring/Summer 2008. The Winter Scheme is
open to non-law students only.
