College, Oxford in 2004 and secured a two
year training contract with the Treasury
Solicitor’s Department (TSol). I presently sit
within the Attorney General’s Office, which
offers an enormous variety of work involving
liaison with lawyers and policy advisors
across Whitehall and beyond. My first two

and Ministry of Defence Private Law teams.
One of the most striking and enticing things
about being a legal trainee with the GLS is
the amount of responsibility and variety of
work you are given at an early stage. Trainees
are expected to handle their own caseload
from day one, albeit with the support of
colleagues who are always willing to impart

I am currently sitting in the Trade Finance
team. My supervisor is a Partner and the
Head of the Banking department. As such
I have typically been involved in a lot of
transactional work, usually centred on the
financing of international trade.

A deal I have been involved in is due to
close soon and I am responsible for keeping
a check on what documents we have been
sent. I sort through the emails that have come
in and amend the checklist of documents to
circulate to the team so that everyone is aware

Degree and .... .... getting a pretty rounded experience, I am
now in a position with a year to go, to be able
to concentrate on the one or two areas I have
enjoyed the most, building on the experience
I have already gained in these areas.
With regard to the type of work you can
expect, again the training system allows you
to often have a large amount of responsibility
early on, often doing the work equivalent to
that of a junior associate. In particular, I have
had much more client contact and contact with
other lawyers than I expected. In addition
to communicating with clients regularly
on a one-to-one basis over the telephone, I
have attended client meetings either at the
completion of a transaction or to advise them
on a particular strategy, attended lawyers
meetings to negotiate contracts, spoken with
counsel in litigious matters and participated

firm, the Government Legal Service and
the European Parliament in Brussels. With
hindsight, I'm pleased that I undertook such
a spread as I felt well informed with regard to
the different options that were available for a
