Trainees get second sight on secondments
At Hammonds, we don’t just second partners
and fee earners to .... .... their training and financial sections.
It was tough, complex work that went to the
heart of commercial trading – they needed a
firm grasp of the changes and the
implications. I got right inside the legislation
and interpreted it, with briefings, guidance
notes, even designing their website. I
developed my commercial skills and client
perspective. I also had first-rate support and
training from my firm.”

10.30am – In the middle of drafting I take an
urgent call from a colleague to attend a
hearing at Manchester Crown Court. Our
client was seriously injured by a driver who
now faces charges for dangerous driving.
The Defendant has absconded but we are
eager for the trial to go ahead as a criminal
conviction will help us in civil proceedings. I
take a note of the criminal hearing and return
with the good news that the trial is to go
ahead as planned.

A deal I have been involved in is due to
close soon and I am responsible for keeping
a check on what documents we have been
sent. I sort through the emails that have come
in and amend the checklist of documents to
circulate to the team so that everyone is aware
of the progress. As many of our deals involve
parties in other jurisdictions, I often liaise
with foreign counsel during a transaction.
As the borrower in this particular deal is a
Nigerian bank, I call our Nigerian counsel to
discuss the outstanding issues.

Singapore
When choosing between the two training
contracts that I had been offered, one of the
most exciting opportunities that drew me
to WFW was the guaranteed overseas seat.
Having already spent time in South East
Asia, I couldn't wait to take the opportunity
to live and work there. During my seat in the
Singapore office I worked mainly on corporate
and finance matters. It was a fantastic
opportunity to work with the local lawyers,
as well as being given the opportunity to run
my own files. Getting to know Singapore
was an amazing experience and I made the
most of opportunities to travel further in Asia
and India. ....Read the full Editorial

the first part of my morning catching up on

Why.... .... in the financial and business press
during the last year.
During my final six months as a trainee I
was seconded to SABMiller, one of Lovells’
clients, and worked within their corporate
legal team. This proved to be an invaluable
part of my training, as it provided me with an
insight into a client’s business and allowed me
to enjoy a greater amount of responsibility. I
completed work on international deals,
and finance related projects, and was able
to see the role of a law firm from a client’s
perspective. This experience gave me a greater
understanding of a client’s needs, which is
crucial for any solicitor, and also confirmed
my desire to qualify into the Corporate team
at Lovells and continue to advise clients in
this area of the law. ....Read the full Editorial
