Financial Services is a booming sector in the UK and standards are very high, especially working for a high-profile firm such as Ernst & Young. I enjoy that I am constantly being stretched and I get to work alongside really talented people. When I get good feedback I know I have done well and can be proud of it.

It can be tough having a full time job as well as studying in my own time – at times it can be challenging. However I always feel supported by my Buddy and Counselling Manager and know that I can talk to them when I have problems.

A Day In the Life of a Trainee…

8.30am
I arrive early ....
.... members of the Banking department – where I’m currently sitting. I check the list of the work that I have to do in the week to focus my mind on what needs to be done and the priority of the tasks. At the moment I’m working on a South African deal that is being listed on the Irish Stock Exchange, which is a new process to me – fortunately my supervisor and the Partner involved have done it all before and are happy to point me in the right direction if I have any questions – which I do! I check the deal timetable so that I am aware of what needs to happen this week, being involved in several deals at the same time requires some organisation!

12.00pm
I receive an e-mail from an associate in my department asking if I have time to help on a quick matter. .... Read the full Editorial

A Day in the Life

Kirsty Hunter: Second-seat trainee solicitor, Denton ....
.... and the Head of the Banking department. As such I have typically been involved in a lot of transactional work, usually centred on the financing of international trade.

9.30am

A deal I have been involved in is due to close soon and I am responsible for keeping a check on what documents we have been sent. I sort through the emails that have come in and amend the checklist of documents to circulate to the team so that everyone is aware of the progress. As many of our deals involve parties in other jurisdictions, I often liaise with foreign counsel during a transaction. As the borrower in this particular deal is a Nigerian bank, I call our Nigerian counsel to discuss the outstanding issues.

10.00am

I have been asked by one of the Partners to accompany him to a meeting with one of our major Bank clients at their offices. .... Read the full Editorial
