My first ever post... the lovely lady from the University careers service, basically trying to scare the crap out of us that “time flies” and “soon you will applying for your graduate job”. This is the type of advice most Freshers choose to ignore as “we don’t have to think about all that for ages”.
However, I believed every word. And while many of my course ....Read Full Post
Shopaholic gets a job irrelevant in terms of your long term careers plans.
This got me thinking about a bit of advice passed on to us by the IBM recruitment lady who been has been knocking around campus this week hoping to snare herself a hot new graduate workforce.

How do you solve a problem like careers? another recent enthralling careers event, we were advised to think about what we enjoy outside of uni and jobs etc, and see it was possible to somehow combine that with career aspirations. were even 10 years ago: just look at the way the
media industry has changed and developed with
broadband and digital television opening up
more and more opportunities for talented
individuals like you. New technology and
changes to the way we work, such as flexitime
and the rise of 24-hour services, are indicators
of an ever-developing job market. The
increasingly wide range of working environments
means there is a wealth of experience to
be gained, and this means there are ample
opportunities to develop your skills while
understanding the challenges of fulfilling your
career goals. I have had an eclectic career,
proving you don't need to have a clear idea of
your future fresh out of university.
After I graduated, my first job was with London

a person can use their imagination all day
long, have a variety of tasks to accomplish,
and have the freedom to say - "I want to try

of such agencies. And the people that make
up these companies are truly inspiring. People
of every background work in this field and all

this is a dream. But then again, dreaming is
exactly what I want to be doing.

One of the best parts of the Fellowship is
being allowed to decide what to do and where
to do it. A tailor-made excursion that caters to
your curiosity, intellect and imagination all at
the same time. And at the end of it, there will
be no two people with the same experience,
because there are no two people who are ever

What do you do day to day?
I work in ISTAR (Intelligence Surveillance
Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance) and
have done since I started, although I moved
departments a year into my time here - but my
skills were transferable. We have flexible
working hours, so most days, I start work at
7am so I can finish early and make the most

What are the best things about working at Dstl?
I really like that we are able to manage our
own flexi-time. It's also good to know that
you can move departments and jobs with the
full support of management, so we also have
flexibility in our careers. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - Hays
Ruth Munday has been with Hays for over
10 years, rising through the ranks from
trainee consultant to .... .... people’s careers – learn
to listen.
What rewards can I expect?
What attracted me to Hays in the first place is
the commission structure. It is paid over and
above a basic salary and designed to reward
you personally on the amount of success you
have. There is a risk element involved, but if
you’re good at your job and get a little bit of
luck, you can earn really good money.
And the work-life balance …
You sometimes need to speak to candidates
and clients in the evenings; however, the
excellent commission more than compensates.
I’ve never failed to take my full holiday
allowance!
What is special about Hays’ culture?
There’s a ‘work hard, play hard’ culture
and colleagues tend to stick together and
support each other. There is high visibility
and your success is recognised at all levels
of the organisational hierarchy. ....Read the full Editorial
