My first ever post... the lovely lady from the University careers service, basically trying to scare the crap out of us that “time flies” and “soon you will applying for your graduate job”. This is the type of advice most Freshers choose to ignore as “we don’t have to think about all that for ages”.
However, I believed every word. And while many of my course ....Read Full Post

The JTI/Gallaher graduate training .... .... successful careers.
Current head of UK cigarette marketing, Tom
Osborne, shares his experience of the journey
from shop floor to his current role in the UK.
Just five years after joining the graduate
training scheme, Tom Osborne is responsible
for developing the brand strategies and
programmes that are designed to reclaim the
UK market leadership for JTI/Gallaher.
Since the acquisition by Japan Tobacco
International (JTI) in April 2007, he finds
himself with a key role at the heart of the
world’s third largest tobacco company.
“I’ve always had a strong entrepreneurial
side and the big brands, size and reach of
JTI/Gallaher was a big draw for me,” says
Tom, who joined the development scheme
in September 2003, having graduated
from Bristol University with a degree in
Sociology. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - Dstl
There's nothing ordinary about Dstl's work
and responsibilities. As an organisation, we're
required to be .... .... to a science careers fair
and the Dstl representatives assured me that,
as a geographer, I would still be an asset to
the organisation.
What do you do day to day?
I work in ISTAR (Intelligence Surveillance
Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance) and
have done since I started, although I moved
departments a year into my time here - but my
skills were transferable. We have flexible
working hours, so most days, I start work at
7am so I can finish early and make the most
of the day.
What are the best things about working at Dstl?
I really like that we are able to manage our
own flexi-time. It's also good to know that
you can move departments and jobs with the
full support of management, so we also have
flexibility in our careers. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - Detica Chris – Graduate Consultant
I first came across Detica at the .... .... I toured the careers
fairs for something different. I'd been to the
presentations from the big IT corporations
and consultancies, but didn't fancy being
another small graduate in their 1000's of staff.
Detica was offering that something different.
Detica is smaller, but its range of clients and
products is large. I was most attracted to
Detica and its involvement in production of
hardware as well as software and its focus on
information intelligence.
I chose a position based on its location in the
country and the need for skills that I had.
It was just a matter of days from submitting
my CV that I had a call back. The following
week I had a telephone interview. A fortnight
later, I was invited to visit the Detica offices
to be interviewed by people doing the kind of
job that I wanted. I had the opportunity to
present some of my best work from university
and to ask them about life at Detica. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - OC&C Strategy Consultants What did you do before joining OC&C?
I studied Economics and Management at
Hertford .... .... Flyers careers guides for
consulting and banking, and this is where
I developed an interest in consulting. I had no
prior business experience, but I had liaised with
lots of recruitment staff for the Future Flyers
guides, and therefore developed a pretty good
knowledge of what consulting was about.
Why strategy consulting as a career?/Why
OC&C?
I felt strategy consulting sounded more
interesting as a career because you get to work
within businesses on high-level issues that can
have a huge impact. I was keen to find a smaller
firm where I could get to know the company
and the staff much more easily. Having done the
internship, I feel it definitely helped me make
an informed decision about which career path
I wanted to take. The main reason I accepted
their offer of a job was that I knew I would
never dread going to work. ....Read the full Editorial

Management consulting aims to make positive

areas where .... ....careers in consulting
With the barrage of headlines proclaiming
the continuing credit crunch and the
downturn in the UK and global economies,
the consulting industry has been better than
most at weathering the economic storm that is
currently affecting many industries in the UK.
In terms of growth, figures have almost halved
from previous years - 6% - 10%, however,
the rate of staff attrition has remained steady
at around 10%, the same as in 2007.
Although growth in the consulting sector as
a whole has undoubtedly slowed recently, it
is still an expanding industry, and demand
for consultancy skills remains. Recruiters are
expecting to make more hires overall in 2008
than in 2007, and despite the crunch, only
18.9% of firms have cut back their hiring
targets as a result of economic conditions, and
1.3% have put recruitment on hold . ....Read the full Editorial
