The Scottish economy has traditionally been lead in heavy industry, the foundation being shipbuilding, coal mining and the steel industries. The extraction of North Sea Oil has also been a key employer in the petroleum related industries, specifically in the north east of Scotland.
The econimic trend started to shift in the 1970's and 1980's from an industrial/manufacturing focus towards a more service oriented economy. Scotland boasts the sixth largest financial centre in Europe, based on funds under management, and many large financial firms are based there. Tourism is another key contributor to the economy of Scotland, and many graduate jobs in Scotland can be found in this industry.
With an unemployment rate lower than most European Union countries, Scotland may be a good choice to start your career.

Severn Barrage
The construction of a multi-billion pound tidal
barrage across the Severn estuary moved a step
closer following the government’s announcement
of a two year feasibility study into the project
which could meet 5-6 percent of the UK’s

Balfour Beatty is part of the Severn Tidal Power
Group set up 20 years ago to develop a barrage
across the estuary. With a tidal range of 14 metres,
the second highest in the world, it would
produce tidal power equivalent to three nuclear
power stations, cutting the UK’s carbon emissions
by 16 million tones a year. As an additional
benefit, it would provide flood protection for the
vulnerable Severn estuary. ....Read the full Editorial
