Growing up in the forests of Pennsylvania, I
spent .... .... halfway through my graduate
degree in London that it dawned on me -
most people don’t get a lot of variety in
their day job. Every school brochure sought
bankers, consultants, or - horror of horrors
- accountants. The other road seemed to be
that of a starving artist - all well and good if I
could pick one discipline to starve over. With
my only work experience being a summer as
a graveyard attendant and another summer as
a copywriting intern, I feared I was destined
to begin my career working the assembly line
at a button factory.
Thank goodness for WPP. I knew after my
first interview, where we discussed everything
from boxed cereal to tribal art, that a career of
variety and excitement did in fact exist. And
now, working in London as a strategist at the
communications agency Mindshare, I feel
like my dreams are coming true. ....Read the full Editorial
By Donna Miller, European HR.... .... for Enterprise’s recruitment
advertising, the aim was to differentiate us
from the majority of graduaterecruiters. Do
you want a boring office job, a thankless junior
role, a chance to spend eighteen months doing
the photocopying? The answer is bound to be
no, so we wanted to demonstrate that a job
at Enterprise is not your ‘normal’ entry-level
position.
Every company has its own corporate identity.
This ranges from company values and internal
award programmes to CSR policies and
compass points showing a specific approach
to doing business. Enterprise was built on
entrepreneurialism, so our corporate brand
has always reflected that. Innocent Drinks,
to take another example, has a strong ethical
standpoint that underpins it.
Any employer brand needs to be closely
aligned with that same corporate identity. ....Read the full Editorial

“The Companies Act 2006 was crucial to the
future of their training and financial sections.
It was tough, complex work that went to the
heart of commercial trading – they needed a
firm grasp of the changes and the
implications. I got right inside the legislation
and interpreted it, with briefings, guidance
notes, even designing their website. I
developed my commercial skills and client
perspective. I also had first-rate support and
training from my firm. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - Milkround Online
Money is a key issue for all graduates,
especially with the introduction of top-up .... ....recruitment service
which would go on to become Milkround Online.
Although the potential of the Internet was far
from being realised in 1996, I was sure it would
have a continuingly influential effect on the
world. As my confidence grew in the project,
I quit my job to focus on it full time: today's
Milkround Online Network is the fruit of many
years’ hard graft. The journey to this point has
not been clear cut by any means, but it does
show you how the industry you start in is not
necessarily the one you will stay in for your
entire career.
When I look around the Milkround Online
office, I see other members of staff who have
changed their career direction, even within the
company. Polly Littlewood joined us as a
temporary administrative assistant while at
university and has become the Second Post
Product Manager, looking after our service for
graduates with experience in the workplace. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - Mayer Brown International LLP
Choosing the right law firm to start your
career with is definitely one of the most
important decisions .... .... Even
in their recruitment Mayer Brown is one of
the few top law firms that really unearths the
best talent in non-traditional places; such as
non-Russell Group universities and in those
embarking on a second career. It makes for
an environment which is not only all-inclusive
and intellectually stimulating, but also downto-
earth and friendly. This was something
which came across during my interviews and
the Vacation Scheme and it was a big factor in
my decision to join.
Mayer Brown spearheaded an LPC course at a
new college, Nottingham Law at Kaplan Law
School, with brand-new facilities in London
Bridge. The location right next to Borough
Market is fantastic and the smaller class
sizes really contribute towards more tailored
learning. The college provides funding for
sports activities and other societies and it also
has strong links with the firm's well supported
Pro Bono unit. ....Read the full Editorial

In the coming year, over 100 graduates will
join our team. As one of them, whatever your

finest minds in your field and with the best
available technology. From day one, you'll be

Two of our recent graduate recruits (after two
years or so with us) said we are 'employee
rather than employer centred' and 'amazingly
flexible'. We're rather pleased with that. It
sums up what we hope all members of our
team feel about working here. Of course, we
expect a lot. But we give a lot, too. ....Read the full Editorial
