Editorial - Dstl
There's nothing ordinary about Dstl's work
and responsibilities. As an organisation, we're
required to be .... .... we look for in our graduate recruits.
In the coming year, over 100 graduates will
join our team. As one of them, whatever your
subject, you'll work with some of the world's
finest minds in your field and with the best
available technology. From day one, you'll be
given the opportunity to contribute your
thoughts and ideas - to make your mark.
You'll shape your own development. Decide
on extra training to help you grow. Work in
cross-discipline groups. Be encouraged to
contribute papers and speak at gatherings.
You'll have the chance to travel. And you'll
take on responsibilities.
Two of our recent graduate recruits (after two
years or so with us) said we are 'employee
rather than employer centred' and 'amazingly
flexible'. We're rather pleased with that. It
sums up what we hope all members of our
team feel about working here. Of course, we
expect a lot. But we give a lot, too. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - Home Office - UK Border Agency
I graduated from the University of Leicester in
2004 with an LLB in Law with French Law. I
really enjoyed .... .... a national recruitment drive run by the
UK Border Agency which really peaked my
interest. The role was for a Higher Executive
Officer Asylum Case Owner in a brand new
Asylum Office.
The recruitment process was quite lengthy
- but well worth the wait! The role was
incredibly wide; I was dealing with asylum
claims from end-to-end which saw me
interviewing asylum applicants, making
decisions, acting as a Presenting Officer
for the Home Office in the Asylum and
Immigration Tribunal and carrying through
the final decision through either integration
of the refugee or removal of those not
entitled to be here. The role was demanding
and challenging (both professionally and
personally) but by far the steepest learning
experience I have ever had. My general
knowledge increased enormously as I had to
become familiar with the historical, political
and general situation of a wide selection
of countries. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - Northern Ireland
More and more people are not only choosing
Northern Ireland (NI) as a destination to visit
but .... .... and work here that recruitment
agencies alongside employers are now
actively targeting people from outside of the
region, especially ex-pats, who have the senior
management skills required to take forward
new and established businesses here.
Alan Braithwaite, from Abacus Professional
Recruitment, comments: "the professionals
we interact with have a desire to enhance
their career path and subsequently command
opportunities that provide progression, access
to quality work and ultimately financial
reward.
"Although many candidates who contacted
us could have been aligned to specific life
episodes as triggers for the move including
marriage, family, education for children,
etc, we have witnessed an organic upsurge
of enquiries from professionals who view
Northern Ireland as an exciting region with
opportunity to make a career and home and
therefore make contact on a speculative basis. ....Read the full Editorial
The EU .... .... selects staff
for recruitment by the European Institutions:
these being the European Parliament, the
Council, the Commission, the Court of Justice,
the Court of Auditors, the Ombudsman,
the Economic and Social Committee, the
Committee of the Regions, and many other
agencies of the EU.
These Institutions offer continuous training
throughout your career, and positively
encourage you to develop your skills and
interests in new professional fields as you
progress. There is a linear career structure
from the entry grades to the most senior of
positions, with the performance, training
/ skills development needs and promotion
prospects of all staff being formally reviewed
annually.
The European Personnel Selection Office
selects candidates through a range of
open competitions, which are currently
being modernised to better assess people’s
competences and in-job abilities, rather than
their knowledge of the EU alone. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - CHP Consulting Frederic Laurent
I graduated from Ecole Polytechnique (Paris)
with a master's .... .... the rest
during the recruitment process, both for their
professionalism and for the respect they
showed towards candidates. I didn't get the
impression that I was just a number,
something which can be a very real feeling at
some of the bigger consulting companies.
Also, CHP replied swiftly after each step of
the process.
My job at CHP started with a month-long
induction; which provided me with the right
knowledge and tools to carry out my day-today
job in IT, finance and consulting. After
this, I was assigned to a business-critical
project for one of the biggest English banking
institutes. This included the migration of one
of their finance portfolios from their old
system onto our solution, ALFA. The project
involved understanding the specifics of the
portfolio, adapting our in-house migration
tools to their system, and checking that the
numbers before and after added up correctly. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - OC&C Strategy Consultants What did you do before joining OC&C?
I studied Economics and Management at
Hertford .... .... with
lots of recruitment staff for the Future Flyers
guides, and therefore developed a pretty good
knowledge of what consulting was about.
Why strategy consulting as a career?/Why
OC&C?
I felt strategy consulting sounded more
interesting as a career because you get to work
within businesses on high-level issues that can
have a huge impact. I was keen to find a smaller
firm where I could get to know the company
and the staff much more easily. Having done the
internship, I feel it definitely helped me make
an informed decision about which career path
I wanted to take. The main reason I accepted
their offer of a job was that I knew I would
never dread going to work.
How was it being an Intern?
When I started as an Intern it was a bit daunting,
but the people here are all really nice and easy
to get on with. ....Read the full Editorial
