Regr/cession surprisingly well-placed in the grand scheme of things. Few of us own property, few have dependants and most are welcome to live in and work from their parents' place. Employment-wise, we've got degrees - and if we can't find work, we're in a good position to reconsider postgrad study. I don't have a lot to complain about today. In fact, I'd ....Read Full Post

Free To A Good Home again. I've found a work experience scheme for print journalism, but it's in Dublin. Travelling and living abroad relies on huge reserves of excitement and a thirst for adventure. Editorial - Dstl
There's nothing ordinary about Dstl's work
and responsibilities. As an organisation, we're
required to be .... .... Ambassadors Scheme (SEAS)
and I absolutely love it!We go out to schools
in the local community and get students
involved with and excited about science.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I do see myself still working at Dstl in five
years. Hopefully I will have completed a
research masters - something I'm currently
looking into - and could possibly be looking
at a secondment to another part of MOD.

Why Dstl?
I came to work at Dstl after my 'A' levels, for a
placement year organised by the 'Year in
Industry' scheme. Dstl then sponsored me
throughout my degree and I came back during
the summer holidays and then after I graduated. ....Read the full Editorial

Business Area: UK Retail Banking, Group
Executive Director's .... .... are on the scheme which is supplemented
by an individual learning fund which you can
use to boost your skills. I have spent some
of my fund on an accountancy qualification
but you don't necessarily need to spend it on
formal classroom learning. Other graduates
have spent their funds on less traditional (but
still valuable) development activities like
funding training and travel for the Microsoft
Challenge Charity event!
Lloyds TSB has a big charity culture as well
as its own charitable foundation. Earlier
this year I was involved in organising an
Emerging Talent charity event that raised
nearly £10,000 for our previous charity of
the year, Barnardo's. The green agenda is
big here too - we are on a mission to reduce
our carbon footprint! We also support
more unorthodox charities like Opportunity
International that provide micro-finance in
developing countries. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - Willmott Dixon Group
The construction and property services
industry is one of the most exciting places
to work. It gives .... .... products of this
scheme and the company has a strong culture
of nurturing its talented people from the start
of their career with the Group.
Each year the Group takes on over 50
graduates as trainee managers, who fall into
three categories; year-out students currently
studying a construction-related degree, postgraduate
trainees with a construction-related
degree or graduates with no prior construction
experience who take a special conversion
diploma.
Graduates focus on one of the following
disciplines; quantity surveying, site
management, planning, estimating and preconstruction.
What are we looking for?
Whilst we prefer graduate trainees with a
minimum of a 2:1 degree who have had
either a year's industrial placement or some
relevant experience, we will also consider
under graduates. ....Read the full Editorial

Job Title: Senior Land & Planning Manager
University: Cardiff
Degree: .... .... This scheme gave me
the perfect mix.
My first experience was a two-week induction
to introduce me to the company and to meet
most of the senior directors, including lunch
with the Chairman and dinner with the Chief
Executive. Spending time with the other
graduates in my group helped to create a
strong relationship with people who would
be going through the same challenges for the
next 12 months.
The first few months gave me a chance to get
stuck into all aspects of the business, from
laying bricks to designing sales centres. I
worked with some great people, who ensured
that my learning curve was incredibly steep.
Although the focus was placed on my
development, it was also really refreshing to
have senior managers and directors actually
sitting back and taking notice of my ideas and
suggestions. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - TUI Travel
Name: David Scott
Age: 24
Education: University of Leeds, BA French .... .... TUI Travel trainee scheme appealed
because of the opportunities and diversity of
the placements spread out over an 18 months
contract. With more than 47,000 employees
across the world and over 200 brands,
including two out of the three largest Travel
companies in the UK (Thomson and First
Choice) it was clear that it was more a case
of deciding what route I personally wanted
to explore rather then being told in which
areas of the business I should gain work
experience. With the Group split into 5 main
sectors, Mainstream, Activity, Specialist and
Emerging Markets, Joint Venture and Online
Destinations Services, there was certainly
no lack of choice, and I was excited about
the opportunities available to me not only
in the UK but also abroad, for example at
TUI Espana in Spain or TUI Deutschland in
Germany or further opportunities in Russia
and China. ....Read the full Editorial

Editorial - Covance
I graduated from York University with a BSc
(hons) in Biology in 2006, and in April 2007,
I joined .... .... a rolling training
scheme of more specialised techniques, in
which there is some scope for the trainee
to input into the direction that their training
takes. This rolling scheme means that even
after a year in the job, there are still new things
for me to learn, which I like as it means that
my job is constantly changing and evolving,
which stops it from becoming monotonous.
As I have become trained in, and competent
in, a greater range of histological techniques, I
have also found that the level of responsibility
to which I am exposed has increased. This
is reflected in the number and type of tasks
which I am set on a daily basis, and the
direction in which my training has gone.
However, the department is set up to introduce
responsibility gradually, and so whilst the
level of responsibility that I have taken on
over the last year has grown, it is likely to
further increase as I spend longer in the job. ....Read the full Editorial
