The Price of Small Company Management Informality

Jane Sandhurst

Being in-house accountant for a small company has given me the flexibility to start setting up my own business. I work three days a week, close to home, giving me two days a week to work on my business whilst keeping the benefit of a regular income.

The informality which leads to this flexibility also has its price.

Two months ago, my boss (the Director of the firm) asked a friend of his to help him solve some of the company’s problems. These ranged from cash flow issues to setting up formal processes for day-to-day operations.

He joined as a part time Finance Director but it is now unclear to me who is running the company. The FD says that things should be done a particular way, whilst my boss asserts that it is his company and that he makes the decisions.

I am stuck in the middle with both of them giving me conflicting instructions.

Part time accountant ... full time mediator.
