| Hiya,
Happy April Fools Day! Got woken up this morning by my Dad telling me Alex Ferguson had resigned. Being a member of a family who are all fanatical Arsenal fans, I leapt out of bed overjoyed! No such luck ufortunately. However, the media have had a few laughs today. Check out the BBC April Fool, apparently Stephen Fry has discovered a new species of mammal: The Shark-Whale...
Anyway, enough of this April Fools rubbish. Thought I would fill you in on my latest attempt to 'hack' into the world of journalism. A friend of a friend had kindly set me up a meeting with a journalist yesterday. I put on my best smile, hastily checked my CV for any updates (there weren't any) and headed into central London.
The journalist was absolutely lovely. Tip for all job hunters, keep networking! I know it can feel pretty soul crushing, constantly hassling people to give you a chance. But people do want to help you out. Honestly! She was reasonably impressed with my CV, but she did say that the best CVs are always 2 pages long, so keep it short and snappy people!
Her main advice though was just to write for anyone and anything. If you truly want to work in journalism then you have to provide evidence of real writing. So send off your CV to all sorts of publications and ask to write a feature. Eventually someone will give you a lucky break. So for all budding journalists out there, keep on writing!
Speaking of writing, I am only a couple of hundred words into my essay. Most of which is the title and some desultory footnotes. Better get my head down.
